Cost-effectiveness of Occupational Health
Business Case 1.
Sickness Absence Management
A manufacturing company with 700 employees had sickness absence rates over 12%. WorkFuture implemented an occupational health service to manage sickness absence, including on-site physiotherapy and an occupational health advisor.
Sickness Absence rates dropped in 6 months to below 4% saving the company over £200,000, a return of nearly 600%. This is in line with Government figures which estimates a saving of 400% for companies that invest in effective occupational health services.
Business Case 2
Work Injuries
A manufacturing company in the construction industry was concerned at the length of sickness absence following injuries at work. The company contacted WorkFuture and it was decided to implement a rapid referral system whereby employees with musculoskeletal injuries were referred to physiotherapy within 48 hours using our network of accredited providers.
The length of absence was reduced from 6-8 weeks down to 2 weeks saving almost £1200 per injury. The total investment was less than £200/injury.
Business Case 3.
Stress
A software company had problems with absence due to stress for a number of its managers. WorkFuture provided a Stress Risk Assessment to identify factors at work that could contribute to the problem. It was identified that improved communication between departments and additional support through training and development would address the issues. These initiatives proved extremely effective in helping to return absent employees back into the workforce and in improving profitability and sales targets.
Business Case 4.
Ergonomics
A manufacturing company had problems due to the large number of complaints of back pain and discomfort from staff working in an office environment. The company asked WorkFuture to investigate and identify a cost-effective solution.
WorkFuture surveyed both the employees and work areas. Changes were required to both the work scheduling and design of one of the offices, at a cost of £1500, that would allow employees to work comfortably and avoid the problems associated with poor postures and extended computer use. The other, previously overcrowded office, was then free for brief meetings and infrequent computer use without the need for costly renovations. The company had minimal expenditure and the staff were pleased that their concerns had been addressed.
