You may not realise that where you place your computer monitor has a significant affect on the comfort of your eyes and the posture of your head and neck.
| 1. Monitor Posiiton |
|
Place your monitor directly in front of you |
| If you have your monitor off to the side even just a small amount you will put strain on your neck and shoulders and be twisting your body. This means you aren’t getting the full support of your chair |
|
Unless – you don’t need to look at the monitor all the time or you need to talk to people in front of you such as bank tellers |
|
2. How close should it be? |
|
Position the monitor an arm’s distance away |
| If you have the monitor too close or too far away than it can lead to eye fatigue. |
| 3. What's the best height ? |
|
Adjust the height so the top of the monitor is level with your eyes. |
| If your monitor is positioned too high than you will be constantly moving your head and neck to view between the keyboard and the screen causing neck and shoulder strain. If its too low than you will be working with a bend neck posture. |
| UNLESS – you wear bifocals in which case a lower monitor height can be more comfortable. |
| 4. Using the tilt angle |
|
Tilt the monitor slightly upwards |
| This makes viewing the screen easier. -but not too much or you will have problems with glare. Tilting the screen downwards is not recommended unless you have problems with glare. |
| 5. Avoid facing the windows |
|
Windows are a major source of glare. The level of brightness from a window is too strong compared to the screen for the eyes to focus comfortably all day and can lead to eye strain |
| 6. Keep the brightness of the screen low |
|
Adjust the brightness level so it is similar to your surroundings. |
| Too much contrast between the screen and the environment can cause eye fatigue and squinting |
| 7. Whats the best font size? |
|
Adjust the font so it is 2-3x the smallest font you can read. |
| 8. How can I reduc the amount of glare? |
|
Simply changing the monitor position by rotating or tilting it can reduce the amount of glare on the screen. |
| Check any glare on your screen by turning it off and seeing if there are any reflections visible from lights etc. Try and reposition the monitor to avoid the reflections from these sources. |
| 9. Should I use a monitor arm? |
|
Do you need a different position through the day . |
| If so consider a swivel arm. An example is if you need to move your monitor infront and away to talk to others. |
| 10. Do I need to clean the screen? |
|
Clean your monitor regularly. |
| Turn it off first and use the right cleaning fluid. For more information on dirty keyboard read our health bites |

TIP: Remember the 20:20 rule – take a break every 20 mins and look into the distance at about 20 feet and focus on an object for 20 seconds. |
